Personality: Much of who Angela Ziegler is relates to the fact that war has touched every aspect of her life. A native of Switzerland, she lost her parents to war at a very young age and because of this she is a pacifist who is deeply critical of militaristic approaches to war. Ironically she still grew up to be a member of the military organization Overwatch. She staunchly opposes some of their approaches, but uses the organization to heal and support as many war victims as she can; as well as those she cares deeply for. This shows that even when she disagrees with someone on something, she is willing to bend her own beliefs in order to reach her greater goals. She is deeply devoted to Overwatch, as well as her work, which shows that despite her disagreements, she is always willing to give it her all and be fiercely loyal to those she works with.

Angela is a medical prodigy. From a very young age it became clear that she was extremely gifted in the medical sciences envisioning revolutionary ideas surrounding tissue and genetic regeneration. Her dedication and perseverance saw her on a fast track through medical school to earn her MD and PHD when she was still in her early 20s. Her work in nanobiology has revolutionized the medical field in her world and she has had a hand in curing illnesses that were previously thought to not have cures. People rave about her work and this has created a sense of pride in herself, but also a bit of an ego. She is humble only to a point and can be quite cocky when out on the battlefield, even downright sassy. And example of this can be seen when she takes out an enemy and responds by calling for a medic. In another line: “I am not a miracle worker...well not always” shows that she is quite secure in her abilities and a little bit less humble than perhaps she could be.

Not long after graduating, she rose to become the head of surgery at a prominent Swiss hospital. It was then that she was sought after by Overwatch and despite her distaste for the military, she was quick to accept their invitation. This led her to new heights of scientific exploration and medical advancement. Despite that she has genius to spare, she chooses to often leave her lab to fight and heal on the battlefield. This shows she puts the life and health of humanity above all else. Angela remains at odds on certain things within Overwatch. She is responsible for creating new biotic technology that she, as well as others use in the field. She never intended for her biotic research to be used for offensive purposes and she is quite afraid of it falling into the wrong hands. She is quite unhappy that a colleague used her tech to enhance the biotic eye that Angela gave her to improve her sniping purposes. These things may be part of the reason that she eventually stood by the disbanding of Overwatch, because she saw them taking paths with her work that she did not agree with. This shows that even when she is loyal to an organization, her morals will ultimately win out when they cross the line of what she believes is good or right. After the shut down of Overwatch, she worked in many less technologically reliant places showing that technology is not at the heart of the work she does and that she herself it at odds with it. She wanted to return to more simple healing practices.

Though she is very serious about her work, Angela is actually quite a playful person. There are several pictures around headquarters of her laughing with her comrades and just having fun. She dressed up as a witch for a Halloween party in a joke contrast to her usual angelic persona. There is often a playful and cheerful tone to the conversations she has. Except for outright villains, Angela manages to work her way into just about everyone’s heart with her loving and compassionate mannerism. Her humor can be seen in many of the lines that she says such as when she is patching herself up and goes: “Self-medicating!” It’s also seen when she deals a final blow to an enemy and says such things as: “patient discharged” and “the prognosis is not good”, showing medical humor.

She is very trustworthy and her comrades put a lot of faith in her to protect them and support them. She was also chosen as the poster girl for support in the Overwatch recruiting posts that were put around the world to encourage it’s people to join up with Overwatch. Despite her angelic demeanor and her true compassion for humanity, she is not without her own faults. It is hinted at that she has done things in the name of science that she is not exactly proud of, particularly in the technology she has created that has been used for violent purposes. She is also willing to go against the law when she deems it necessary; she once participated in an unauthorized mission because there were many people who were in need of medical attention for her to listen to orders.

Angela is a an advocate for peace among people. She takes it upon herself to try and fix the interpersonal relationships of those around her that she cares about. When Overwatch’s two leaders and prior close friends become at odds with one another, she tries desperately to help them sort out their problems. She is consistently shown to show great care and compassion towards her comrades and friends always concerned with not just their physical health, but their mental health as well.

Personal Moral Codes: Angela holds herself to a high standard of morality, letting very little come between her and doing what she feels is right and good. She only bends those morals when it suits what she believes is the greater good. For example: Military equals bad, and medicine equals good, yet she joins the bad military because she can save people on a larger scale. Because she is using medicine as an excuse to join the military, she doesn’t see herself as part of the violent organization that she so strongly opposes. She is a complete pacifist and despises war and violence. At one point she sighs and asks: “Must violence always be the answer?” before going out into battle.

These morals won’t be bent too far though; she holds Overwatch accountable for their actions. When they start to participate in anything that she finds unforgivable, she speaks out against them and says that they should be disbanded as an organization. She doesn’t believe in using power to harm people and believes that Overwatch cross that line.

Angela’s sense of right and wrong are not reliant on the law, however; she is willing to break rules when it means helping others. She defies orders from superior officers in order to bring aid to as many people as possible. Her personal goals and what she believes is right are more important than the rules or laws that those in power have laid out before her.

Insecurities/Personal Demons: Angela struggles deeply with death and the thought of losing those she cares about. This is shown by the fact that she worked to find a way to resurrect her teammate as well other people going as far as she possibly can to stop death in its tracks. She has a bit of a God complex, and even the population sees her as an Angel of Mercy, which is how she got her call name. One example of how she goes to any lengths to save a life can be seen when she saves the life of Genji, an overwatch member who was on the brink of death after his brother tried to kill him. Despite that most of his body was incapable of being saved she figured out how to keep him alive by turning him into a cyborg. Whether this was for the best or not. She joined Overwatch to save people on a larger scale because she knew that working in a solo hospital would only allow her to do so much. She has also dedicated her life to research into nanobiotics to improve the health and wellbeing of the population. She enjoys being responsible for saving lives, but she doesn’t necessarily take into account whether she should be responsible for deciding who lives and who dies.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses: All used when wearing her Valkyrie suit.
Angelic descent - Able to slowly descend to the ground after flying.
Regeneration - She can regenerate her own health slowly.
Caduceus Staff - One of her weapons that allows her to do multiple things. These include allowing herself to be tethered to a teammates like a guardian angel, healing teammates, and boosting her teammates damage.
Caduceus blaster - a gun she uses to shoot enemies
Resurrect - Angela is able to rush into battle to find fallen teammates and bring them back from the brink of death.
Valkyrie - An ability that enhances the power of her attack, and allows her to fly and heal from a safer distance and boosts the range of her healing so she can heal from farther away.

Angela is not a powerful fighter despite being a powerful healer. Her health is low and she is slow during a battle. She requires other people to hide behind to stay safe and is not great in a one on one battle. Her gun, though it does the trick is not very powerful. Her strengths are in healing and not in fighting. She also tends to become a target because she is the source of healing.

Ability/Power/Magic Warping: She isn’t really a super human, and most of her powers are healing based and tied to her Valkyrie suit. However, her technology is advanced and so within game it will not work at all times.

Inventory: Her Valkyrie suit, and a medical bag with supplies

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Depends on the situation and reasoning. I lean towards no, but I want to keep an open mind.

What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: I love pretty much all aspects of psychological horror. I very much enjoy the tense atmosphere that is built and challenges the characters involved. Violent themes can be fun to play out. I also enjoy the mysterious aspect of thrillers, not being quite sure what’s going to happen next.
